At my academic orientation with the School of Commerce (SoC) at Waseda, I registered for my classes to take during my Spring semester and set up my Waseda email and student ID in a system called MY Waseda which is comparable to the MY UH system. The orientation assistants were helpful in alleviating some of my stress, but I also found it helpful that I was able to communicate with them in Japanese as I noticed some of my peers in the exchange orientation struggling to read the instructions and communicate with the assistants when they weren't proficient in Japanese language. To the right is a photo of the paperwork and computer setup we were provided with at the orientation to register for our classes.
It should be noted that this orientation was held on March 30, exactly 13 days before classes are scheduled to begin. This relatively tight timeline is reflective of the stressful process that registering for classes for my semester abroad has been like since before I even arrived in Tokyo. Unfortunately, many of the pre-approved Shidler classes are not offered during the Spring 2023 semester at Waseda, so I ended up having to petition for several classes to transfer over as credits for UHM courses. Thankfully, these petitions seem to be gaining approval, and the rate of success in getting classes I try to register for at the SoC at Waseda is quite high. Unlike other schools, the registration for SoC classes is not a lottery, so that alleviated a layer of stress in the registration process as well.
Overall, the orientation and class registration process at Waseda, in my experience, was stressful but also a good opportunity to see the campus for the first time and get myself acquainted with the Waseda online system. Having never seen a college campus other than my home campus at UH Manoa, this experience is already very exciting!
